Word Problems Project

Improve Students' Word Problem Solving

Help us evaluate a new fully digital word-problem intervention for 3rd grade. The program is grounded in evidence-based practices, combining metacognitive strategies with schema-based instruction. Fuchs et al., 2021

How the Program Works

Week 1

Screen Whole Class

Run a whole-class pretest in Week 1 to quickly identify students who would benefit most from the project. The pretest is fully digital and simple to administer via QR codes.

Week 2-10

Practice

Ensure students have access to their tablets for 3 × 20 minutes of fully digital practice each week.

Week 11

Measure Progress

Post-test in Week 11 measures growth for all students. The post-test is also fully digital and simple to administer via QR codes.

FAQ

What are the inclusion criteria for students to participate?

All students, including those with IEPs and those who present with persistent math challenges, are great candidates for the program. Students who lack conversational English skills or with an IQ below 85 will not be able to access the program.

What is schema-based instruction and “attack strategies”?

Schema-based instruction teaches students to recognize the underlying structure of a word problem and use a consistent strategy to represent and solve it, rather than relying on keywords. Attack strategies are repeatable steps students use when approaching a word problem—for example, reading the problem carefully, identifying what is known and unknown, representing the situation, solving it, and checking the answer.

Does the whole class participate and should every student have their own device?

The whole class completes the Week 1 pretest and the Week 11 post-test. The pretest helps identify students who would benefit most from focused practice during Weeks 2–10. It's best if every student has their own device, but tablets can be shared between intervention groups. Students will access Levebee using a simple QR code login. They do not need to type usernames or passwords.

What happens if we miss a session because of an absence, holiday, or school event?

If it's possible, it's best if sessions can be made up later. If needed, we can extend the 11 weeks time to make up missed sessions.

Do I need parental/guardian consent?

Yes, you should get parental/guardian consent. We will provide you the Parent/Guardian Consent Form for parents/guardians to sign.

What other documents am I going to receive?

Participants must read an information sheet about a research study and sign a form saying they agree to participate. We will provide to you Student Assent Form in English (which should be read aloud by an adult) and Staff Assent Form.

How will student data and privacy be protected?

We are fully compliant with COPPA and FERPA. All collected students information will be pseudonymized.

Will individual students or schools be identified in the results?

No. Published or shared results will not identify individual students, teachers, or schools.

What happens after I apply?

After applying, within 7 days, we will let you know whether you have been selected for the project. After that, we will arrange access to the app and contact you about the next steps, including the project schedule and onboarding instructions.

Who can I contact with questions?

If you have more questions, you can book a call with us or write at support@levebee.com. The Research Lead is Dr. Renata Wolfova.
